sync-with-google.pngApple's Address Book update in today's release of OS X 10.5.3 now adds the ability to sync your contacts with Google Contacts. To enable contact sync, make sure you've updated to 10.5.3 and then head to the General tab of your Address Book preferences. From there, turning on sync is as simple as ticking a checkbox and entering your Google account info. Address Book has supported Yahoo Address Book sync for a while, so Gmail users will be thrilled to see the added support. We didn't see many sexy features in the 10.5.3 update to Leopard, but Google Contact Sync for Address Book definitely qualifies.

SyncMan is a simple application for syncing your Mac's Address Book with your Gmail contacts, a feature long desired by Gmail and Google Calendar users who may have other sync tools already in place. While we have noted that a similar feature is forthcoming in the more broad-based iCal syncing tool Spanning Sync 2, SyncMan concentrates just on contacts and is available now.

SyncMan is €9.95 (~$15.32) and a demo is available.

We already mentioned that the recent Gmail revamp includes new keyboard shortcuts, but this one deserves an individual shout: when you're viewing a Gmail message, you can archive it AND move to the next or previous message in one keystroke. Use the square brackets:

  • [ to archive and go to the previous message
  • ] to archive and go to the next message
Alternately, you can press y, then o to archive a message and go to the next one. You must have the keyboard shortcuts enabled in your account (visit Settings to do so) for this to work.

Gmail's new version broke many plug-ins and Greasemonkey scripts, so Google decided to come up with a long-term solution: an API for Greasemonkey.
Greasemonkey is an integral part of the web experience for many experienced users. Google acknowledges that some people are going to change their own experience of our web applications regardless of what we do. Resistance, as they say, is futile. It would also be somewhat hypocritical. After all, a Google employee wrote Greasemonkey in the first place [my note: Aaron Boodman], another wrote these scripts to add functionality to Gmail [my note: Mihai Parparita], and a third wrote two books on the subject (and these docs) [my note: Mark Pilgrim].

Instead, we would like to provide a little help to make such scripts more robust. Instead of finding elements by XPath or DOM traversal, this API provides accessor methods for getting common screen elements. Instead of forcing you to monkey-patch (ahem) our internal functions, this API provides callbacks to call your functions when specific events occur.

This API is experimental. New features and code changes may still cause Greasemonkey scripts to break.

The first Greasemonkey script that uses this API is Mihai Parparita's Macro, which brings additional keyboard shortcuts to Gmail, and the rest of his already famous scripts should also be ported to Gmail's new codebase. The API is not meant to expose messages, contacts or settings, it's more like a convenient way to customize Gmail's interface and functionality without relying too much on the implementation's details.

You probably know that Gmail detects some patterns that could be associated with an event and offers to add that event to your Google Calendar. But not all the messages contain these patterns and sometimes a mail could trigger a great idea for an event. So how to add an event related to a Gmail message? While this is not a new feature, it's not very easy to discover and it has a very interesting side-effect.

In the "More actions" drop-down, select "Create Event" and then enter the details of the event. Unfortunately, Google Calendar doesn't add snippets from the message to the event, so you'll have to copy-paste some relevant fragments. Once the event is created, you'll see it in Gmail's sidebar, next to the message. This could server as a reminder when you get a reply or read the message again in the future.

It's not very clear whether Gmail shows only one event associated with a message or all of them because the behavior isn't consistent. Gmail should also offer a way to add annotations to a message and link to an email message from a calendar event or personal document.
